NCCT stands for Non-contrast computed tomography, a medical imaging abbreviation.
CT scan performed without intravenous contrast, the standard first scan for suspected stroke, head trauma and intracranial hemorrhage, and for kidney stone protocols. Fresh blood appears bright on non-contrast images, and contrast could hide or mimic it.
Example: NCCT head: no hemorrhage, ASPECTS 9; proceeding to CTA.
Usage notes
Also written "CT without contrast" or "CT w/o". Stone protocols use low-dose NCCT because nearly all urinary stones are visible without contrast. Non-contrast scans are also chosen when contrast is contraindicated, although tumors, abscesses and bowel inflammation are usually better seen with it.
