CategoriesUnits & Measurements

MANOVA stands for Multivariate analysis of variance, a statistics abbreviation.

An extension of ANOVA that tests group differences on several correlated outcome variables at once, such as multiple test scores or symptom measures.

Example: A MANOVA on reading, writing and math scores showed a significant effect of school type, Wilks' lambda = 0.87.

Usage notes

Common test statistics include Wilks' lambda, Pillai's trace, Hotelling's trace and Roy's largest root, with Pillai's trace usually considered the most robust. Running one MANOVA instead of many separate ANOVAs helps control the overall Type I error rate.
