Designation for a private company limited by shares in the UK, Ireland and many Commonwealth countries, meaning shareholders' liability is limited to any unpaid amount on their shares. A UK private limited company must end its name with "Limited" or "Ltd" and cannot offer shares to the public.

UK companies register with Companies House, and a private company can be formed with a single shareholder who is also the sole director.
