CategoriesTechnology & Computing

LiPo stands for Lithium polymer, a consumer electronics abbreviation.

Lithium-ion battery built in flexible pouch cells with a polymer or gel electrolyte, allowing thin, lightweight shapes. Drones, radio-controlled models, slim phones, tablets and wearables use LiPo packs.

Example: Charge the drone's LiPo in a fireproof bag and never leave it unattended.

Usage notes

Hobby packs are labeled by cell count, such as 3S or 4S, with each cell nominally 3.7 volts. LiPo cells swell, or "puff", when damaged, overcharged or old, which is a sign to stop using them. Over-discharging below about 3.0 volts per cell can permanently harm them. Many phone batteries described as Li-ion are actually lithium-polymer pouch cells.
