LASIK stands for Laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis, a surgical abbreviation.
Refractive eye surgery that corrects nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism by creating a thin corneal flap and reshaping the underlying cornea with an excimer laser. Most patients see well without glasses within a day or two.
Example: LASIK consult: thin corneas on topography, so PRK recommended instead.
Usage notes
Pronounced "LAY-sik". The FDA approved excimer lasers for LASIK in the late 1990s, and millions of procedures have since been performed. Dry eye is the most common side effect, and night glare or halos can occur. LASIK does not prevent the age-related loss of near focus called presbyopia.
