L1 stands for Layer 1, a cryptocurrency & blockchain abbreviation.
A base blockchain that processes and finalizes transactions on its own network, such as Bitcoin, Ethereum or Solana. Layer-1 design choices determine a chain's security, decentralization and throughput.
Example: The team keeps its vault contracts on Ethereum L1 for security and moves payments to a rollup.
Usage notes
The "blockchain trilemma", the difficulty of maximizing security, decentralization and scalability at once, drives the split between layer 1 and layer 2. New base chains often compete on speed and fees. In the OSI networking model, layer 1 is the physical layer instead.
