1. Lane

Geography & Places · Address Abbreviations

Narrow road, historically a country path between hedges or fields; in modern subdivisions Lane is simply a pleasant-sounding name for a residential street. Penny Lane in Liverpool and Drury Lane in London are well-known examples.

Example: The cottage at 14 Cherry Ln has a red door and a picket fence.

LN is the USPS standard. In rural Britain many lanes are genuinely single-track roads with passing places. In mathematics ln means the natural logarithm, an unrelated use.

2. Natural logarithm (ln)

Units & Measurements · Math Abbreviations

The logarithm to base e, about 2.71828, written ln x from Latin logarithmus naturalis. It is the standard logarithm of calculus because the derivative of ln x is simply 1/x.

Example: The half-life is ln 2 divided by the decay constant.

Read aloud as "ell-en", "lin" or simply "log". Continuous growth and decay are modeled with e and ln: an investment growing at 7 percent a year doubles in about ln 2 ÷ 0.07, roughly ten years, which is the basis of the "rule of 70". Calculators have a separate LN key next to LOG.

3. Lymph node (LN)

Medical · Anatomy Abbreviations

Small bean-shaped organs along lymphatic vessels that filter lymph and house immune cells. Reports describe nodes by location, short-axis size, shape and features such as loss of the fatty hilum, which suggest infection or cancer.

Example: Right cervical LN 1.8 cm, firm and fixed; excisional biopsy planned.

Normal nodes are usually under about 1 cm in short axis, with some regional exceptions such as the groin. Cancer staging uses the N category of the TNM system to describe nodal spread. The plural is LNs, and enlarged nodes are called lymphadenopathy. In nephrology LN means lupus nephritis.

4. Lightning Network (LN)

Technology & Computing · Cryptocurrency & Blockchain Abbreviations

A layer-2 payment network built on bitcoin in which users open payment channels and route instant, low-fee transactions off-chain, settling final balances on the blockchain only when channels close.

Example: The café takes bitcoin over LN, and payments clear before the coffee is poured.

Proposed by Joseph Poon and Thaddeus Dryja in a 2015 white paper, with mainnet software released in 2018. El Salvador's Chivo wallet used it after bitcoin became legal tender there in 2021. Running a node means managing channel liquidity, so many users rely on custodial wallets. In mathematics ln is the natural logarithm.

5. Light novel (LN)

Texting & Internet Slang · Fandom and Fan Fiction Abbreviations

Japanese illustrated novel aimed at teens and young adults, often serialized and adapted into manga and anime. Known for their manga-style cover art and illustrations.

Example: The anime only covers half of the LN, so I started reading ahead.

Many popular anime, such as Sword Art Online and Re:Zero, began as light novels. Titles are often long and descriptive. Fans read official translations or fan translations.

6. Legalman (LN)

Military · US Navy and Coast Guard Rating Abbreviations

Navy paralegals who help prepare courts-martial and nonjudicial punishment proceedings, process legal claims, maintain records and support legal assistance offices for sailors and families. They work under judge advocates in legal service offices and on large staffs.

Example: LN1 Brooks prepared the charge sheet and arranged witnesses for the special court-martial.

Legalmen are trained at the Naval Justice School in Newport, Rhode Island, and many complete civilian paralegal certification. The Coast Guard uses no separate legal rating. LN is also the standard notation for the natural logarithm in mathematics.
