KWD stands for Kuwaiti dinar, a currency abbreviation.
Kuwait's currency and the highest-valued currency unit in the world, worth more than 3 US dollars. Issued by the Central Bank of Kuwait, it is divided into 1,000 fils and pegged to an undisclosed basket of currencies.
Example: The monthly apartment rent is KWD 450.
Usage notes
The basket peg, reintroduced in 2007, is dominated by the US dollar. During the 1990 Iraqi occupation, Iraq declared the dinar abolished; after liberation, Kuwait issued new banknotes and canceled the series looted from its central bank. ISO 4217 lists the dinar with three decimal places.
