JXL stands for JPEG XL, a file format abbreviation.
Royalty-free image format standardized as ISO/IEC 18181 in 2022, designed as a long-term successor to JPEG with better compression, HDR, animation, progressive decoding and lossless recompression of existing JPEGs to files about 20 percent smaller.
Example: The archive converted its JPEGs to JXL losslessly and saved a fifth of its storage.
Usage notes
JPEG XL combined Google's PIK and Cloudinary's FUIF proposals. Its adoption became a cause among web developers after Google removed experimental support from Chrome in 2023, while Apple added support to Safari 17 the same year. Photoshop, GIMP and many image viewers can open it. The file extension is .jxl.
