KML stands for Keyhole Markup Language, a file format abbreviation.
XML-based format for geographic data such as placemarks, paths, polygons and overlays, used by Google Earth, Google Maps and GIS software. Zipped KML files with images use the .kmz extension.
Example: Import the KML of the hiking route into Google Earth to see it in 3D.
Usage notes
KML was created by Keyhole Inc., whose EarthViewer software became Google Earth after Google acquired the company in 2004. The Open Geospatial Consortium adopted KML as an international standard in 2008. It uses longitude and latitude in the WGS 84 coordinate system. GPX is preferred for GPS tracks, while GeoJSON is common in web mapping.
