iSCSI stands for Internet Small Computer Systems Interface, a networking abbreviation.
Carries SCSI storage commands over TCP/IP, so a server can use a disk volume on a remote storage array as if it were a local drive. It delivers SAN-style block storage over ordinary Ethernet rather than dedicated Fibre Channel hardware.
Example: Present a 2 TB iSCSI LUN from the NAS to the backup server.
Usage notes
Standardized in RFC 3720 in 2004 and consolidated in RFC 7143. The client is called the initiator and the storage the target, and the default port is 3260. Performance depends heavily on network design, so iSCSI traffic usually gets a dedicated VLAN or physical network. Pronounced "eye-scuzzy".
