iPSC stands for Induced pluripotent stem cell, a biology abbreviation.
Adult cell, such as a skin or blood cell, reprogrammed back into an embryonic-like pluripotent state by switching on a handful of genes. iPSCs avoid the ethical issues of embryonic stem cells and can be made from patients to model diseases, test drugs and potentially generate matched replacement tissues.
Example: Neurons derived from patient iPSCs reproduced the protein clumps seen in the disease.
Usage notes
Shinya Yamanaka created iPSCs from mouse cells in 2006 using four factors, Oct4, Sox2, Klf4 and c-Myc, now called Yamanaka factors, and from human cells in 2007; he shared the 2012 Nobel Prize with John Gurdon. Also written iPS cells. Clinical trials using iPSC-derived cells began in Japan in 2014.
