IgG stands for Immunoglobulin G, a biology abbreviation.
The most abundant antibody class in blood, making up about three quarters of circulating immunoglobulins. IgG provides long-lasting protection after infection or vaccination, is the only class that crosses the placenta to protect newborns, and is the basis of most therapeutic antibodies.
Example: Antibody tests detected IgG but not IgM, suggesting a past rather than recent infection.
Usage notes
IgG has four subclasses, IgG1 to IgG4, with different functions. In infection serology, IgM typically appears first and IgG later, so the pattern helps date an infection. Rising IgG4 levels mark a group of conditions called IgG4-related disease.
