IMiD stands for Immunomodulatory imide drug, a drug class abbreviation.
Thalidomide and its analogs lenalidomide and pomalidomide, which modulate the immune system and degrade specific cancer-promoting proteins. They are central to treating multiple myeloma and some myelodysplastic syndromes and lymphomas.
Example: Maintenance IMiD lenalidomide 10 mg days 1-21; aspirin for VTE prophylaxis.
Usage notes
Thalidomide caused severe limb defects in more than 10,000 babies worldwide in the late 1950s and early 1960s, a disaster that led to stronger drug laws, including the 1962 Kefauver-Harris Amendments in the US. All three drugs are dispensed under strict REMS programs requiring pregnancy testing. They raise the risk of blood clots, so prophylaxis is given.
