IABP stands for Intra-aortic balloon pump, a cardiology abbreviation.
Mechanical support device in which a balloon in the descending aorta inflates during diastole to boost coronary blood flow and deflates just before systole to reduce the work of the left ventricle. It is inserted through the femoral or axillary artery.
Example: IABP placed for cardiogenic shock with acute MR; 1:1 augmentation, MAP improved to 72.
Usage notes
Introduced clinically in 1968 by Adrian Kantrowitz, the IABP was long the most widely used mechanical support device. The IABP-SHOCK II trial (2012) found no mortality benefit in cardiogenic shock after heart attack, so routine use declined in favor of selective use and newer devices such as the Impella pump. Inflation timing is set from the ECG or arterial waveform.
