HYT stands for High year tenure, a military term abbreviation.
Maximum number of years a member may serve in a given enlisted grade before being required to separate or retire, used by the Navy, Air Force and other services to keep promotion flowing.
Example: At 20 years as a petty officer first class, he reached HYT and had to retire.
Usage notes
The Army uses the term retention control point (RCP) for the same concept. Limits are periodically adjusted to manage force size, and waivers are possible for critical skills. Members forced out by tenure limits before 20 years may qualify for involuntary separation pay.
