GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time, a time zone abbreviation.

Mean solar time at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, London, and the legal winter time of the UK. In everyday use it is treated as UTC+0, and Iceland, Ghana, Senegal and several other West African countries keep it all year.

Example: Kickoff is at 15:00 GMT, which is 10 a.m. Eastern in the US.

Usage notes

GMT became the world reference for longitude and time at the 1884 International Meridian Conference in Washington, D.C. Scientists replaced it with UTC for precise timekeeping, but GMT remains the popular and legal name for British winter time; in summer the UK switches to BST (GMT+1). Ireland also uses GMT in winter, calling it winter time.
