GDD stands for Global developmental delay, a pediatric & neonatal abbreviation.
Significant delay in two or more developmental domains in a child under five, used when the child is too young for reliable intelligence testing. Many children with GDD are later diagnosed with intellectual disability.
Example: GDD at 3 years (motor, language, social); chromosomal microarray and fragile X testing ordered.
Usage notes
First-line genetic tests include chromosomal microarray and fragile X testing, which find a cause in a meaningful minority of children. DSM-5 includes GDD within the intellectual disability chapter. Early intervention services are recommended without waiting for a diagnosis.
