FTT stands for Failure to thrive, a pediatric & neonatal abbreviation.
Inadequate weight gain or growth in an infant or young child, typically defined as weight below the 2nd percentile or a fall across two major percentile lines. Most cases stem from not taking in enough calories, though medical and social causes must be considered.
Example: FTT: weight dropped from 50th to 5th percentile; feeding history, calorie count and social work consult.
Usage notes
Many clinicians now prefer "growth faltering" or "faltering growth", the term used in NICE guidance, because FTT can sound like blame. Historically, cases were divided into "organic" and "nonorganic", a split now considered artificial. Hospital admission is reserved for severe cases or safety concerns.
