ELBW stands for Extremely low birth weight, a pediatric & neonatal abbreviation.
Birth weight under 1,000 g (about 2 lb 3 oz), usually in babies born before about 28 weeks. Survival has improved greatly with surfactant, antenatal steroids and modern ventilation, but long-term complications remain common.
Example: ELBW 640 g at 24 weeks; intubated, surfactant given, umbilical lines placed.
Usage notes
Survival of infants born at 22 to 24 weeks, the limits of viability, varies widely between centers and depends partly on whether active treatment is offered. Many survivors face chronic lung disease and developmental challenges. Some neonatologists use the term "micropremie" for the smallest infants.
