Self-pitying exclamation after a bad or embarrassing event, usually used humorously about minor misfortunes such as spilled coffee or a missed bus.

Usage notes

The website FMyLife, an English spin-off of the French site Vie de Merde, popularized the phrase in the late 2000s by publishing short reader anecdotes ending in "FML." Usually ironic rather than truly despairing. Contains strong profanity, so it does not belong in work or school messages.
