EVAR stands for Endovascular aneurysm repair, a cardiology abbreviation.
Repair of an abdominal aortic aneurysm by inserting a fabric-covered stent graft through the femoral arteries, sealing off the aneurysm from blood flow. It avoids a large abdominal incision and shortens recovery compared with open surgery.
Example: EVAR for a 5.8 cm infrarenal AAA; CT at 1 month shows no endoleak.
Usage notes
Lifelong imaging surveillance is needed because blood can leak into the aneurysm sac (endoleak), classified as types I to V, and reintervention rates are higher than after open repair. Trials such as EVAR-1 and OVER showed lower early mortality with EVAR, with the difference narrowing over time. Fenestrated grafts treat aneurysms close to the kidney arteries.
