ETV stands for Endoscopic third ventriculostomy, a neurology abbreviation.
Neurosurgical procedure in which an endoscope is passed into the brain's ventricles to create a small opening in the floor of the third ventricle, letting cerebrospinal fluid bypass a blockage. It treats obstructive hydrocephalus, especially aqueductal stenosis, without implanted hardware.
Example: Aqueductal stenosis with ETV Success Score 70; ETV preferred over a shunt.
Usage notes
Avoiding a permanent shunt eliminates the risk of shunt infection and mechanical failure, though the opening can close over time. The ETV Success Score, published in 2009, estimates the chance of success from age, cause of hydrocephalus and prior shunting. Combined with choroid plexus cauterization, the technique has been used widely in infants in Uganda and other low-resource settings.
