EIT stands for Engineer in Training, a professional certification abbreviation also used in science.
Designation granted by state licensing boards to engineering graduates who have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering exam, marking the first step toward Professional Engineer licensure. Many states now use the title Engineer Intern (EI) instead.
Example: Recent graduates join the firm as EITs and work under the supervision of licensed engineers.
Usage notes
After about four years of qualifying experience, an EIT can sit for the PE exam. Some states require formal application for EIT certification, while others simply record the passed FE exam. Similar intern titles exist for surveyors, such as Surveyor in Training (SIT).
