CWI stands for Certified Welding Inspector, a professional certification abbreviation.
Certification from the American Welding Society (AWS) for inspectors who verify that welding meets codes and specifications, offered since 1976. Candidates need work experience and must pass a three-part exam on fundamentals, practical inspection and code application.
Example: The structural steel welds were checked by a CWI before the beams were painted.
Usage notes
CWIs recertify every three years and requalify by exam or continuing education every nine years. The American Welding Society should not be confused with Amazon Web Services, which shares its initials. Senior inspectors may earn the SCWI.
