EFB stands for Electronic flight bag, an aviation abbreviation.
Tablet or installed computer that replaces paper charts, manuals and performance tables in the cockpit, running apps for navigation charts, weather and takeoff calculations. Most airlines now issue iPads to pilots as EFBs.
Example: Since switching to an EFB, each pilot carries about 35 pounds less paper in the flight case.
Usage notes
The name recalls the heavy leather flight bags of charts and manuals pilots once carried. American Airlines estimated that dropping paper charts saved more than a million dollars of fuel per year. Regulators classify EFBs as portable or installed and approve their use during critical phases of flight. ForeFlight and Jeppesen FliteDeck are widely used apps.
