DPE stands for Designated pilot examiner, an aviation abbreviation.
Private individual authorized by the FAA to conduct practical tests, or checkrides, for pilot certificates and ratings on the agency's behalf. DPEs give most private, instrument and commercial checkrides in the US and charge applicants a fee, often several hundred dollars or more.
Example: The DPE scheduled my private pilot checkride for the 14th, weather permitting.
Usage notes
Checkrides follow the FAA's Airman Certification Standards (ACS). A successful applicant leaves with a temporary certificate, and the permanent plastic card arrives by mail. Examiner shortages have caused long waits for checkrides in parts of the US, prompting FAA reforms of the program.
