EFA stands for Exploratory factor analysis, a statistics abbreviation.
A technique for discovering the underlying factors that explain correlations among many observed variables, such as survey items, without specifying a structure in advance.
Example: EFA with oblique rotation suggested four factors explaining 61 percent of the variance.
Usage notes
Researchers choose the number of factors with criteria such as eigenvalues above 1, scree plots or parallel analysis, the last being most recommended. Rotation methods include varimax (orthogonal) and oblimin or promax (oblique). Charles Spearman's 1904 work on general intelligence pioneered factor analysis.
