EEZ stands for Exclusive economic zone, a region abbreviation.

Sea zone extending up to 200 nautical miles from a country's coast, in which it has rights over fishing, oil, gas and other resources under the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea. Foreign ships may still navigate through it.

Example: Fishing boats were seized inside the country's EEZ without permits.

Usage notes

France has the world's largest EEZ thanks to its overseas territories, followed by the United States. Territorial waters, where a state has full sovereignty, extend only 12 nautical miles.
