DFM stands for Design for manufacturing, an engineering abbreviation.

Engineering practice of designing parts so they are easy and economical to produce with the intended process, for example by using standard hole sizes, avoiding deep narrow pockets in machined parts, adding draft angles to molded parts and keeping wall thicknesses uniform.

Example: The DFM review flagged undercuts that would require a costly side action in the injection mold.

Usage notes

Also written design for manufacturability. Studies of product development often attribute most of a product's cost to decisions made during design, so early DFM reviews with manufacturers save money. DFM is part of a broader "design for X" family that includes assembly, testing, service and recycling.
