DDAVP stands for 1-deamino-8-D-arginine vasopressin (desmopressin), a drug abbreviation.
Synthetic analog of antidiuretic hormone used for central diabetes insipidus, bedwetting, nocturia and bleeding in mild hemophilia A and von Willebrand disease. It is given as tablets, nasal spray or injection.
Example: DDAVP 0.3 mcg/kg IV before dental extraction for von Willebrand disease.
Usage notes
The main risk is water retention leading to hyponatremia and seizures, especially in children and older adults who drink large amounts of fluid. The FDA removed bedwetting indications for desmopressin nasal sprays in 2007 after reports of severe hyponatremia. For bleeding, desmopressin works by releasing stored factor VIII and von Willebrand factor.
