D10W stands for Dextrose 10% in water, a pharmacy abbreviation.
IV solution with 100 g of glucose per liter, used for neonatal hypoglycemia, for treating insulin overdose and as a continuous infusion when TPN is stopped suddenly. Unlike more concentrated dextrose, it can run through a peripheral vein.
Example: Neonate glucose 32: give D10W 2 mL/kg IV bolus, then 80 mL/kg/day.
Usage notes
Also written D10. Emergency medical services in many regions now use D10 instead of D50 for adult hypoglycemia because it causes less tissue damage if it leaks from the vein and fewer rebound highs. Infusions stronger than 12.5% generally require a central line.
