Cryo stands for Cryoprecipitate, a hematology and oncology abbreviation.
Blood product made by slowly thawing fresh frozen plasma and collecting the cold-insoluble precipitate, rich in fibrinogen, factor VIII, von Willebrand factor and factor XIII. It is used mainly to replace fibrinogen in bleeding patients.
Example: Fibrinogen 88 with ongoing postpartum hemorrhage: 10 units cryo ordered.
Usage notes
A common adult dose is a pool of about 10 units, which raises fibrinogen by roughly 70 to 100 mg/dL. Fibrinogen below about 150 to 200 mg/dL during major bleeding, as in postpartum hemorrhage and trauma, is a typical trigger. Purified fibrinogen concentrate is an alternative in many countries. Cryo was once a mainstay of hemophilia treatment before factor concentrates.
