CR2 stands for Canon Raw version 2, a file format abbreviation.
Raw image format used by Canon digital cameras from the mid-2000s until 2018, storing unprocessed sensor data in a TIFF-based structure.
Example: Lightroom imports the CR2 files from my old Canon 5D Mark III without any problem.
Usage notes
Canon's first raw format was CRW. Most Canon DSLRs of the 2000s and 2010s, including the EOS 5D series, wrote CR2. Canon switched new cameras to CR3 starting with the EOS M50 in 2018. Free tools such as darktable and RawTherapee read CR2 files, as does Canon's own Digital Photo Professional software.
