CISG stands for United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods, a contract abbreviation.
Treaty adopted in Vienna in 1980 that supplies uniform rules for contracts for the sale of goods between parties in different countries. It applies automatically when both parties' places of business are in contracting states unless the contract excludes it.
Example: Because the seller is in Germany and the buyer in Ohio, the CISG governs unless the contract opts out.
Usage notes
In force since January 1, 1988, it has been ratified by the United States, China, most of the EU and many other countries, but not the United Kingdom. Contracts often exclude it in the governing-law clause because lawyers know domestic sales law better. It does not cover consumer sales or questions of a contract's validity.
