1. Central African Republic

Geography & Places · Country Name Abbreviations

Landlocked country in the center of Africa, independent from France since 1960, with Bangui as its capital. News agencies and the United Nations use CAR for a country that has hosted a UN peacekeeping mission (MINUSCA) since 2014.

Example: Peacekeepers in CAR escorted the convoy to Bria.

With ISO codes CF and CAF, CAR is a news-style abbreviation rather than an official code. In 1976 the leader Jean-Bédel Bokassa declared it the Central African Empire, a name dropped in 1979.

2. Capital adequacy ratio

Business & Finance · Banking Abbreviations

Bank's total regulatory capital as a percentage of its risk-weighted assets, used to judge whether it can absorb losses. Basel standards set the minimum total capital ratio at 8 percent, before additional buffers.

Example: The RBI requires Indian banks to maintain a CAR of at least 9 percent, above the Basel minimum.

Also called the capital to risk-weighted assets ratio (CRAR), especially in India. The ratio combines Tier 1 and Tier 2 capital, while modern analysis focuses more on the CET1 ratio, the highest-quality layer. In insurance, CAR means contractors' all risks cover.

3. Combat Action Ribbon

Military · Military Award and Decoration Abbreviations

Navy, Marine Corps and Coast Guard award for members who actively participated in ground or surface combat, under enemy fire, roughly equivalent to the Army's combat badges.

Example: The lance corporal earned his CAR during the battle for Fallujah.

Established in 1969 and retroactive to December 7, 1941. Corpsmen serving with Marine units can earn it. In civilian usage, CAR more often means compound annual return in finance. It is highly valued among Marines because it marks direct exposure to combat.

4. Contractors' all risks insurance

Business & Finance · Insurance Abbreviations

Construction insurance covering physical damage to a project under construction, materials and often third-party liability, from start of work until handover.

Example: The CAR policy paid when a storm toppled the scaffolding onto the new walls.

Engineering projects with large machinery use the related erection all risks (EAR) cover. In the US, builder's risk insurance plays a similar role.
