Cal. 5th stands for California Reports, Fifth Series, a legal citation abbreviation.

Official reports of the California Supreme Court, published under the direction of the state's Reporter of Decisions; the fifth series began with opinions issued in 2016. California courts and lawyers cite it first under the California Style Manual.

Example: Briefs filed in California courts must cite the Supreme Court decision to Cal.5th, not just P.3d.

Usage notes

The California Style Manual closes the abbreviation up and puts the year first: "Dynamex Operations West, Inc. v. Superior Court (2018) 4 Cal.5th 903". The fourth series, Cal.4th, covered 1991 to 2016. Bluebook style instead writes "Cal. 5th" with spaces and the year at the end.
