amend. stands for Amendment, a legal citation abbreviation.

Shortened form of "amendment" in constitutional citations, followed by a Roman numeral, as in "U.S. Const. amend. I" for the First Amendment. It appears in briefs, opinions and law review footnotes whenever a specific amendment is cited.

Example: The suppression motion rests on U.S. Const. amend. IV and the state's own search-and-seizure clause.

Usage notes

In text, write "the Fourth Amendment" with a capital A. The first ten amendments, the Bill of Rights, were ratified in 1791. Only the Twenty-first Amendment has repealed another (the Eighteenth), and the Twenty-seventh, proposed in 1789, was not ratified until 1992. The plural is "amends."
