BRAC stands for Base Realignment and Closure, a military term abbreviation.
Process created by Congress to close and consolidate US military bases through an independent commission whose recommendations are accepted or rejected as a package. Closures affect local economies for years.
Example: The town's economy struggled for years after the BRAC closure of the air base.
Usage notes
BRAC rounds took place in 1988, 1991, 1993, 1995 and 2005. The package approach was designed to take politics out of individual base decisions. Proposals for new rounds have repeatedly failed in Congress. Pronounced "BRACK."
