1. Command and control
Military · Military Term Abbreviations · also used in technology
Exercise of authority and direction by a commander over assigned forces, and the people, procedures, communications and facilities used to plan, direct and coordinate operations.
Example: Jamming disrupted enemy C2 and left their units unable to coordinate.
Variants add capabilities: C3 adds communications, C4 adds computers, and C4ISR adds intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance. In cybersecurity, a C2 server is the system attackers use to control compromised computers, borrowing the military term.
2. Second cervical vertebra (axis)
Medical · Anatomy Abbreviations
Vertebra on which the atlas and skull rotate, distinguished by the dens (odontoid process), a peg of bone projecting upward through the ring of C1. The joint between C1 and C2 provides about half of the neck's rotation.
Example: Type II odontoid fracture of C2 in an 84-year-old after a ground-level fall.
Odontoid fractures are among the most common cervical fractures in older adults. A "hangman's fracture" is a fracture through both pars of C2, named after judicial hanging injuries. In rheumatoid arthritis, inflammation can loosen the ligaments holding the dens, causing dangerous atlantoaxial instability.
