CategoriesBusiness & Finance

BFOQ stands for Bona fide occupational qualification, a human resources abbreviation.

Narrow exception in US anti-discrimination law allowing an employer to hire on the basis of sex, religion, national origin or age when that trait is reasonably necessary to the normal operation of the business, such as casting a female role or hiring clergy for a religious institution.

Example: Customer preference is not a BFOQ, so the restaurant cannot hire only female servers.

Usage notes

Race and color can never be BFOQs under Title VII, and courts read the exception very narrowly.
