1. Applicant tracking system

Business & Finance · Human Resources Abbreviations

Recruiting software that posts job openings, collects applications, parses resumes, routes candidates through interview stages and stores hiring records for compliance. Most medium and large employers use one, such as Workday, Greenhouse, iCIMS or Lever.

Example: Apply through our careers page; email applications aren't entered into the ATS.

Popular advice about beating "ATS robots" is often exaggerated: most systems rank or filter only when recruiters set up knockout questions or keyword searches, and the claim that 75% of resumes are automatically rejected has no solid source. Simple formatting still helps resume parsing. US employers must keep application records for at least one year under federal rules.

2. American Thoracic Society

Medical · Respiratory Abbreviations

Medical society for pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine, publishing clinical practice guidelines and technical standards, including spirometry standards written with the European Respiratory Society. It publishes the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Example: ATS/ERS 2019 spirometry standards require at least three acceptable maneuvers.

Its roots go back to 1905 as the American Sanatorium Association, focused on tuberculosis, before it became the American Thoracic Society. Its annual international conference is one of the largest respiratory meetings. ATS co-authors guidelines on pneumonia, interstitial lung disease, tuberculosis and pulmonary hypertension with partner societies. Headquartered in New York.

3. Against the spread

Sports · Other Sports Abbreviations

Sports betting record showing how a team performs relative to the point spread rather than straight wins and losses. A team that wins by more than the spread, or loses by less, covers.

Example: The Lions went 12-5 ATS last season, the best mark in the NFC.

Bettors and handicappers track ATS records to spot teams the market undervalues. A "push" occurs when the margin equals the spread exactly. Legal sports betting expanded across many US states after the Supreme Court struck down the federal ban in 2018.

4. Alternative trading system

Business & Finance · Stock Market & Investing Abbreviations

SEC-regulated trading venue that matches buyers and sellers of securities without being registered as an exchange, including dark pools and electronic networks for stocks, bonds and other assets. ATS operators must register as broker-dealers and file Form ATS.

Example: Roughly a tenth of US stock volume trades in ATS dark pools, where orders are not displayed before execution.

Regulation ATS, adopted in 1998, created the framework. Dark pools let institutions trade large blocks without revealing their intentions, but several operators have faced enforcement over undisclosed practices. In HR technology, ATS means applicant tracking system.
