BFA stands for Bachelor of Fine Arts, a degree abbreviation.
Professional undergraduate degree in visual or performing arts in which roughly two-thirds of coursework is studio, rehearsal or performance work. It is the standard degree at art schools such as RISD and the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and for conservatory-style acting, dance and design programs within universities.
Example: Admission to the BFA in acting requires an audition with two contrasting monologues.
Usage notes
Written B.F.A. in AP style. Accreditation standards for art and design schools expect professional degrees like the BFA to devote far more credits to the major than a liberal arts BA in art, which typically assigns about a third. The BFA is the usual preparation for an MFA.
