AWD stands for All-wheel drive, an automotive abbreviation.

Drivetrain that sends power to all four wheels automatically, usually all the time or whenever sensors detect slip, without driver input. AWD is common on crossovers, sedans and performance cars and improves traction when accelerating on wet, snowy or loose roads.

Example: Get the AWD version if you're commuting through Vermont winters; it's worth the extra $1,500.

Usage notes

AWD differs from 4WD mainly in intent: AWD uses a center differential or computer-controlled clutch for on-road use, while 4WD typically adds a driver-selected transfer case with low-range gearing for off-road work. AWD helps a car get moving but does nothing to shorten braking distances on ice, so winter tires matter more. Audi's quattro rally cars of the early 1980s popularized AWD for performance, and Subaru made it standard across most of its lineup.
