AKST stands for Alaska Standard Time, a time zone abbreviation.

Alaska's winter time, nine hours behind UTC, used in Anchorage, Fairbanks, Juneau and most of the state. In summer Alaska shifts to Alaska Daylight Time (AKDT), one hour behind the US West Coast.

Example: The Iditarod ceremonial start is Saturday at 10 a.m. AKST in downtown Anchorage.

Usage notes

Before 1983 Alaska spanned four time zones; a consolidation that year put nearly all of the state in one zone, with only the western Aleutian Islands on Hawaii-Aleutian time. Because Anchorage lies far west for its zone, winter-solstice sunrise comes after 10 a.m.
