1099-DIV stands for Dividends and Distributions (IRS Form 1099-DIV), a tax abbreviation.

Brokerages, mutual funds and companies issue this statement to report dividends and capital gain distributions paid to an investor. Box 1a shows total ordinary dividends, Box 1b the qualified portion taxed at lower capital gains rates, and Box 2a capital gain distributions.

Example: Even though I reinvested every dividend, the 1099-DIV still shows them as taxable income.

Usage notes

Reinvested dividends are taxable in the year paid and raise the investment's cost basis, a detail investors often forget when they later sell. Foreign tax paid by international funds appears in Box 7 and may qualify for the foreign tax credit. Dividends earned inside IRAs and 401(k)s are not reported on this form.
