Usage notes

The form was revived for tax year 2020 after decades out of use; before that, contractor pay appeared in Box 7 of Form 1099-MISC. The long-standing $600 threshold was raised to $2,000 for payments made from 2026 by legislation passed in 2025. Payments to corporations are generally exempt, except legal fees. Pronounced "ten-ninety-nine en-ee-see."
