1098-T stands for Tuition Statement (IRS Form 1098-T), a tax abbreviation.
Colleges and other eligible institutions issue this statement to students, showing qualified tuition and related expenses paid (Box 1) and scholarships or grants received (Box 5). It supports claims for the American Opportunity and Lifetime Learning credits.
Example: Download your 1098-T from the student portal before claiming the education credit.
Usage notes
The form shows only tuition and required fees; course-required books and supplies can also count toward the American Opportunity credit if documented separately. When Box 5 scholarships exceed qualified expenses, the excess is generally taxable to the student. Parents who claim the student as a dependent use the student's 1098-T to claim the credit.
