yd stands for Yard, a US customary and imperial unit abbreviation.

Three feet or 36 inches, exactly 0.9144 meter. Americans meet it on football fields (100 yd between goal lines), golf scorecards, fabric counters and in landscape materials sold by the cubic yard.

Example: She hit a 160 yd seven-iron onto the green.

Usage notes

A popular legend says King Henry I defined the yard as the distance from his nose to his outstretched thumb, but this is unproven. The 1959 agreement among the US, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa fixed the international yard in meters. In the UK, road signs still show distances under a mile in yards.
