XMPP stands for Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol, a networking abbreviation.
An open, XML-based protocol for instant messaging, presence and real-time communication between federated servers, much as email servers exchange mail. Google Talk and Facebook Chat once supported it, and it still underpins some messaging, gaming and IoT systems.
Example: Our internal chat runs on an XMPP server, so any compatible client can connect.
Usage notes
Grew out of the Jabber open-source project begun by Jeremie Miller in 1999 and was standardized by the IETF in 2004; "Jabber" remains a common name for it. Extensions are published as numbered XEPs. Major consumer messengers moved to closed protocols during the 2010s, reducing XMPP's visibility.
